Essential preparation steps to ensure your laboratory tests provide the most accurate and reliable results.
Why Preparation Matters
The accuracy of your lab results depends not just on our testing procedures, but also on how well you prepare before your visit. Following these guidelines ensures we can provide you with the most reliable results.
General Preparation Tips
Fasting Requirements
Many tests require fasting for 8-12 hours before your appointment. This includes:
- Glucose testing
- Lipid panels
- Comprehensive metabolic panels
Water is usually allowed during fasting periods. Check with our staff about your specific tests.
Medications
Some medications can affect test results. Let us know about all medications, supplements, and vitamins you're taking. Don't stop taking prescribed medications without consulting your doctor.
Hydration
Stay well-hydrated (with water) before your blood draw. This makes your veins easier to access and can make the process more comfortable.
Day of Your Visit
- Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up
- Bring your ID and insurance information
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete any paperwork
- Let the phlebotomist know if you tend to feel faint during blood draws
After Your Visit
After your blood draw, keep the bandage on for a few hours and avoid heavy lifting with that arm. Results are typically available within 24-48 hours.
